Privacy

Jotle has no accounts, no adverts and no tracking. It keeps only what the game needs to score your answers, keep the leaderboard fair and read your feedback.

On our server

A random ID in a cookie

When you first open Jotle, your browser gets a cookie holding a random number. It lets the game recognise your device, so you can come back to the day's Questions and see your Results. It says nothing about who you are, and it lasts about 13 months unless you clear it.

Your Guesses

When you send a Guess, right or wrong, they are recorded when they arrive. We use them to check the timer, to work out how rare each answer is, and to improve the answer lists. Your Guesses stay linked to your cookie for 7 days maximum, so your Results and the Yesterday page can show them. After that, the link is removed for good: the Guesses are kept only as anonymous answers that help score future days, and can't be traced to you, your device or your other days.

A scrambled form of your internet address

We never keep your IP address in the game's records, only a one-way scrambled code made from it, to spot abuse such as one network sending floods of plays. The key that scrambles it changes every 7 days, and the codes are deleted after 7 days.

Leaderboard

Only if you join, everyone can see your nickname on that day's leaderboard. Each day's leaderboard entries are deleted after 7 days; the nickname itself stays with your cookie until you ask us to delete it, so you don't have to type it again.

Feedback you send

What you write, which Question it's about, and your email if you choose to give one. We use the email only to reply to you, and delete it as soon as we've replied, or after a month at most. After a month, the feedback is no longer linked to you or your device; we may keep what you wrote to remember ideas and fixes.

Web server logs

To protect the game from spam and bots, our web server keeps a log of requests: your full IP address, the page or what you did (such as sending a Guess), the time and your browser's name. Each log entry is deleted after 7 days.

Once in a while we count the log's visits by country, region and town, time of day, device type and the site that linked to us, and keep only those totals, which can't be traced to anyone.

Backups

We keep copies of the game's records in case of a fault. Each backup is deleted after 30 days, so anything we delete is gone from the backups within a month too.

Deleting your data

Open Feedback and choose Delete my data (a message is optional). Send it from the device and browser you play on: your message carries your cookie, which is how we find your records, since we don't know who you are. We'll delete everything still linked to it, including your request. If you clear your cookies first, we can no longer tell which records are yours. Anything already unlinked (see above) is anonymous and can't be traced to you.

What we never do

Anything unclear? Ask through Feedback and we'll answer.
